An Awareness Walk to Help
Stop the Resource Recovery Mega Landfill

A view from below the viaduct BridgeCome enjoy a semi-guided 5-mile walk on the Snow Shoe Rail-Trail. The course begins at the site of the former Peale Station on the Rail-Trail, near Grassflat, Pennsylvania.

This level, out-and-back course visits the historic, scenic 110-foot high Viaduct Railroad Bridge and the Peale Tunnel, the longest railroad tunnel built in Centre County. Explore a piece of local railroad history and enjoy breathtaking views of the Moshannon Gorge, its interesting rock outcroppings and wildlife.

Check-in/Registration:
11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.

$10 (includes Great Peale Walk T-shirt) until September 8th

$12 registration after September 8th or on the day of the walk.

Family special: Half-price discount for the 3rd family member or more if you preregister (e.g., 2 adults and 1 youth is $25; 2 adults, 2 youth is $30).

A musical tribute by Richard Sleigh and Bruce Young to those who once lived and worked in Peale, Pennsylvania. Update (9/13): Opening act by Ed McDade with a new song he wrote for us called "Stop the Dump."

Walk Begins:
1:00 p.m.
Walk at your own pace, bring a camera for wonderful scenery and a flashlight for the Peale tunnel to get a sense of what will be lost if the proposed landfill is approved!

Wear comfortable walking shoes—The rail-trial bed is basically smooth with some loose stones.

Directions and Parking:
Take Kylertown Exit off I-80 and head North on Route 53. At about 3 miles, turn right at Grassflat sign (at Jim and Charmaigne's Restaurant). Follow posted "Walk" Signs through Grassflat. The paved road will lead directly onto a dirt road (Peale Road). Travel on Peale Road for about 2 miles. Park along the road, just before the concrete Peale Bridge. Optional transportation will be provided from the parking area, up a short, rugged hill to the registration area.

Maps and information about the proposed landfill, Snow Shoe Rail-Trail, Allegheny Front Trail, Moshannon Creek, and other area landmarks will be available.
