When Pigs Fly: Part 1
Waste Disposal Benefit to Rush and Snow Shoe Townships
People Protecting Communities, with supporting expertise, has begun to evaluate Resource Recovery, LLC's (RRLLC) official benefits claim documented in their landfill permit application submitted to DEP in May 2006 for their proposed landfill in Rush Township.
A landfill applicant must prove the benefits of a landfill will outweigh the harms a landfill will inflict on society and the environment. If the benefits do not outweigh the harms, DEP will deny the permit.
Some of RRLLC's claimed benefits appear to be so greatly exaggerated that we think pigs will fly before the designated recipients will receive the millions RRLLC promises in their landfill permit application!
Let's consider the benefit RRLLC claims Rush and Snow Shoe Townships will gain by disposing of their waste in the proposed Resource Recovery Landfill.
The actual charges for waste disposal for Rush and Snow Shoe Townships in 2006, based on weighed-in deliveries at the Centre County Solid Waste Authority (CCSWA), add up to only $74,944 per year.*
RRLLC's landfill permit application claims this waste disposal benefit to Rush and Snow Shoe Townships is worth $283,885 per year— 3.8 times higher than the actual cost!
You cannot claim a higher benefit for replacing a service than the service actually costs.
RRLLC greatly exaggerates this benefit!
Why did RRLLC choose the numbers they did rather than simply call the Centre County Solid Waste Authority to get the FACTS?
Watch for When Pigs Fly: Part 2 for further analysis of RRLLC's claimed benefits.
* Actual charges were calculated using the higher tonnage per capita rate of Snow Shoe Township. Snow Shoe Township mandates trash pickup and delivers all waste to the Centre County Solid Waste Authority.
